Inheritance Tax Planning

Inheritance Tax is payable by all those who die and have estates valued over the “nil rate band”. The 2009/2010 nil rate band is £325,000.

Income Protection

Income protection is designed to protect income in the event of a long term illness or accident.

You decide on how long you would like to wait before a claim is paid. Usual periods are 1, 4, 13, 26 and 52 weeks. This of course depends upon your specific needs, occupation, lifestyle and other income you may be receiving. Cover will last until a specified age, usually retirement.

The maximum benefit you can usually claim is 50% of your taxable income / taxable profits.

Do not confuse Income Protection with Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance (MPPI). Income Protection is cover throughout your full working life, if needed. MPPI cover is designed as short term cover usually for a maximum 12 months.

State benefits are very low compared to what you are likely to need if you cannot work due to accident or illness. Please take advice as clients often over insure and waste money paying premiums for a policy that they may not be able to claim on.

Critical illness protection provides a tax-free payment in the event of a life assured being diagnosed with a pre-determined critical illness, within the agreed term of a policy.
